🌳 Bur Chinkapin Oak (Quercus macrocarpa × muehlenbergii)
Zones: 4–8 | Height: 50 ft | Spread:** 40–60 ft | Growth Rate: Medium
Light: Full sun | Soil: Well-drained to loamy or slightly rocky soils
Acorn Drop Time: Mid-September to Early October
🏞️ Product Description:
The Bur Chinkapin Oak is a powerful hybrid that blends two of the best-performing white oaks—Bur Oak and Chinkapin Oak—into one tree that brings the best of both worlds: sweet, early-dropping acorns and strong adaptability. This hybrid is known for producing abundant 1" acorns that are loaded with nutrition and hit the ground just in time to kick off early hunting season.
It’s a must-have tree for anyone managing habitat or improving hunting property with high-quality mast producers.
⏱️ Early Drop, Sweet Mast:
Bur Chinkapin Oak produces smaller, sweeter acorns that typically begin dropping as early as mid-September, making it one of the earliest-producing oaks in the white oak family. The lower tannin content makes the acorns more palatable, and they’re quickly devoured by deer, turkeys, and small game.
This early drop helps fill the nutrition gap before more common acorn drops occur, giving you a big edge in wildlife attraction.
🦌 Wildlife Magnet with Habitat Power:
The smaller acorns are ideal for younger deer and turkeys and provide a crucial high-carb boost as animals shift into fall feeding patterns. Planting these near stand locations or food plots can draw game in reliably during early season hunts.
Plus, its strong structure and adaptability make it a great long-term tree for habitat improvement and reforestation projects.
🌱 Vigorous Growth & Versatility:
Thanks to hybrid vigor, the Bur Chinkapin Oak establishes well and handles a wider range of soils than either parent tree alone. Whether you’re planting upland slopes or edge habitat, this oak holds its own and keeps delivering year after year.
🛠️ Planting Tips:
-
Space trees 25–35 ft apart for proper canopy development
-
Use Tree Survival Kits for early growth support and protection
-
For best acorn production, plant in groups or near other white oak family species
-
Water during dry spells during the first growing season for strong root establishment
🐾 Summary:
The Bur Chinkapin Oak is an ideal choice for landowners who want an early-dropping, sweet-mast oak that pulls in wildlife when other food sources are scarce. Tough, adaptable, and productive—it’s a tree that gives you results fast and keeps on delivering for decades.
Sweet acorns. Early season pull. Serious habitat value.

Healthy Trees, On Time!
I placed my first order couple months ago. Everything came on time, order was right, and trees healthy. Everything has leafed out and growing great! Had such a good experience that I placed a second order. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Oak Orchard
I purchased 35 hybrid oak trees from Morse in 2005 and a majority of them are still alive and have been producing acorns for years. One is even big enough to hunt from. I planted them with tree tubes and watered them regularly for the first two years. It has been a pleasure watching them grow.

Great customer service!
I highly recommend Morse Nursery! My trees arrived 100% healthy. I was really impressed by the height of the trees. I expected little trees like I’ve gotten from other nursery’s. Will keep buying from you guys. Great customer service too.
